More Education
Last week in class we continued our discussion on education. One article that we read that truly shocked me was the article on the new third grade law. The newly developed law requires all students to take a reading proficiency test to establish whether or not they are ready to move on to the 4th grade. I always knew that students were behind in Elementary School but I never thought they could be held back a couple years for not performing well in ONE topic. My sister actually was a slow reader in Elementary School but she started to practice everyday and worked with my parents a lot and she is now one of the best readers in her class. I do not believe that holding students back will serve them any good. However, I agree that students should take a test to see where they are at. This will therefore give teachers an idea of where the students are and what they need help on. The new law establishes after school help, summer reading camps, and one on one personal tutoring to help further the education of many students. I like this idea very much because then all students will be able to obtain help if they need it. It ensures that no child will be left behind in our school system. My views on this topic are very spread out and I can agree to disagree on certain points of the new law that has been established.
I agree with your viewpoints on the third grade law. It does seem outrageous that a student held back just because of one subject, it doesn't only give them a year to improve their reading skills to the required level for fourth grade, but also they are forced to be unnecessarily behind in other subjects as well. It is however good that teachers offer extra help to students who are struggling so they won't be behind, unfortunately a standardized reading test is the only was to determine a student's reading level and whether or not extra help is needed.
ReplyDeleteI also think students should not be held back for underachieving in one subject
ReplyDeleteI completely agree that holding kids back is way too much for simply being behind in reading. And i also agree that reading tests could just help teachers know what kids need more help and with what.
